Ready, Set, Compost!
WAYNE COUNTY, OH, Mar. 18, 2021 — It’s almost that time of the year. The snow is melting, birds are chirping, and spring is in the air! This means that it is time to think about our gardens and get the compost pile started. Whether you are using a bin, pit, pile, tumblers, or vermin, it’s important that you know what ingredients to use.
Composting is a great way to give back to the earth and return the rich nutrients to the soil. Composting for the first time can seem overwhelming, but don’t fret, let nature do the work.
First, gather your material. The correct ratio is 3:1, add three parts of brown material to one part of green. Brown material includes things high in carbon like paper, sawdust, leaves, straw, and other plants. Green material is high in nitrogen includes things such as grass clippings, coffee grounds, fruit and veggie peels, and kitchen scraps.
Avoid putting anything in your pile things that may have pesticides, chemicals, bones, or may attract pests, like meat scraps. Turn your pile periodically and let nature create nutrients for your garden! Just like that!
