Hazardous Waste Collection Scheduled in Wooster

WAYNE COUNTY, OH, Oct. 2, 2020 — The Wayne County Health Department, Wayne County Commissioners, and the Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne Recycling District will be hosting two household hazardous waste (HHW) collection events on October 14 and November 18 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Wayne County Fairgrounds, 199 Vanover Street, Wooster.

Residents must make an appointment to drop off materials and not be permitted to enter the fairgrounds without a confirmed appointment.

Appointments can be made at www.timetorecycle.org/hhw-appointments/ or by calling the Wayne County Health Department on Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 330-264-2426 ext. 215.

Residents are asked to remain in their vehicles for their safety and must provide their driver’s license. A signed affidavit certifying that the waste was generated in a single or multi-family household and was used for residential purposes will also be required.

The hazardous waste cannot be from a commercial or industrial entity, generated in a government facility, medical office, non-profit organization, school, church, or farm. Waste from industrial and commercial entities is regulated differently from household waste.

Residential hazardous waste accepted: 

• Aerosols
• Automotive fluids (oil, antifreeze, fuel injector fluid, etc.)
• Cleaning supplies and other household chemicals
• Diesel, kerosene, gasoline (Limit 10 gallons per car. Containers will not be returned. All containers must be closed tightly.)
• Mercury-containing devices (ex. thermometers)
• Oil-based paint (No latex)
• Pesticides, herbicides, fungicides
• Fluorescent bulbs with tubes up to 8 ft. and all sizes of CFL

To identify oil-based paint, look on the back for the cleanup section. Oil-based paint requires paint thinner or mineral spirits. Latex paint will say to use water and soap for the cleanup. Latex Paint will use phrases like “water-based” and usually housed in a plastic container.

Rules for the hazardous waste collection:

• Residents must have an appointment to drop off materials
• Upon entering the facility, please drive slowly
• Please provide your driver’s license
• Confirm your appointment with an attendant
• Complete EPA waiver form on iPad
• Pull forward only when asked to drop off your materials
