Jail Receives $15 Million Grant

WAYNE COUNTY, OHIO, Friday, April 21, 2023 — Wayne County will receive $15 million in matching funds from the State of Ohio for the renovation of the jail.

“We are very thankful to Governor DeWine and Lt. Governor Husted for allocating funds for jail renovation and to the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections for recognizing the need Wayne County has for this grant,” Wayne County Commissioner Sue Smail said. “It will be a tremendous help, and we are very appreciative.”

The jail opened in 1977 and has a maximum allowable capacity of 120 inmates. With the grant, an additional 72,000 square feet of space will be added, which will bring bed capacity to 248 when the project is complete.
