The Wayne County Park District was created in August 1991 with the goal to ensure that selected natural areas within Wayne County are conserved for outdoor recreation, education, and enjoyment by present and future generations.

The WCPD manages the Barnes Preserve, a 76-acre parcel that has a combination of mature woods and open pasture with mulched trails in the woods. The land was once part of the Wayne County Care Center farm and is named after the Barnes family that operated the Care Center for many years.

Five park district commissioners serve the Wayne County Park District in a volunteer capacity.
